If you’re looking for some outdoor fun this weekend, take a ride to Gay City State Park on the Hebron-Bolton town line. Encompassing more than 1,500 acres of outdoor space, including mill-town ruins dating back to the 19th century, the park offers a wealth of activities.
The hiking trails are a popular draw here, some open to hikers and joggers only and some allowing bikes and non-motorized vehicles. (Check out their website for a great map of the trails.) Grab your pup and take them along, as leashed dogs are allowed in picnic areas as well as the trails. If you’re more into relaxing in the sunshine, pack a picnic for one of the many grassy areas, picnic areas with tables, or the pond, where you can kick back or swim all day.
From the third Saturday in April through Columbus Day Weekend, there is a parking fee, so consider getting season passes to save a few dollars if you’ll be frequenting the park. On weekends, the park charges an entry fee of $9 for residents; on weekdays, there's no charge to enter.
