Steven Murray—known by friends as "Cheeks"—is so serious about fried chicken that it sent him on a cross-country road trip. In 2014, he set out to find the perfect fried chicken, or at least learn what not to do. His Southern roots set high standards as he sample wings at big-name franchises and hole-in-the-wall pizza shops across the U.S. Again and again, he encountered the same problems: frozen chicken, an excess of oil, and too much breading.
Rather than accept the status quo chicken wing, Murray decided to do something about it. He opened Cheek's Chicken and Waffles at a spot not too far from Broadleaf Apartments the following year. Although it may be a relative newcomer to the Manchester dining scene, customers are already raving about the perfectly crispy, golden-brown wings and sandwiches at the eatery. Of course, you can also get your chicken loaded atop waffles. Or skip the chicken and have your waffles accented with sweet extras, like cinnamon sugar or Nutella.
