Although it's a local franchise, Bear’s Smokehouse Barbecue will have you feeling like you’re in the South after just one bite. The owner, Jamie “The Bear” McDonald, is a Kansas City transplant who learned all that he knows from growing up in what many call the barbecue capital of the world.
Now open near Broadleaf Boulevard, the new South Windsor location pays homage to its two sister restaurants with a similar but more simple menu. You can purchase meats like pulled pork or chicken, kielbasa, brisket, or burnt ends by the pound and pair them with some sides for a great meal. Local favorites are the creamy mac and cheese and the sweet and savory corn bread. Other options include barbecue beans, mashed sweet potatoes, baked potatoes, collard greens or coleslaw. If you’re visiting for the ribs, note that beef ribs are sold only on the weekends.
One of Bear's must-try items is the moink balls, which are bacon-wrapped meatballs that are out of this world delicious. It’ll be tough, but try to save room for one of their delicious pie slices for dessert!
